The Association promotes education and mutual understanding of representatives of different religions and nations. For intolerance, hostility, discrimiantion on the basis of religion or ethnics stems from lack of authentic information and ignorance. That is why qualitative information is an important means of strengthening of good-neighbourliness in the society, and its easiness of access is an essential indication of openness of modern society. So, since 1998, the monthly newspaper “Arraid” in Russian has been published, intended for free distribution across Ukraine. The newspaper is an official edition of the Association. Its contents are also available in electronic form (http://gazeta.arraid.in.ua/). It is especially popular for Crimean Tatars for whom it often appears to be the only source connecting them with the Muslim world. The newspaper also comes out in Arabic for the Arabian Diaspora in Ukraine.

The latest news and details related to the Association’s activities, as well as documents from conferences, media reviews and press-releases can be found on the official site of “Arraid” (http://www.arraid.in.ua/).

One can aquaint himself with Ukrainian and foreign news of the Islamic world on the web-site “Islam for All” (http://www.islam.com.ua/), functioning since 1999. The site conents material explaining the principles and essence of Islam, its significance and role in the past and present. The news page, informing about current events in Ukraine and the countries of Islamic world is regularly renewed. On the site are also published Fatwas of authoritative Islamic scholars. At the present time it is collected more than 1000 questions and answers. An actively functioning forum allows the users to discuss Islamic faith and recommends books educating on spiritual issues.

Translations of the meanings of the Holy Quran are available on the separate page (http://www.quran.org.ua/), supplied with convenient tools for search and thematic index.

Since 2006 functions one more site – “Islam in Ukraine” (http://www.islam.in.ua/). It operates in Ukrainian, Russian and English languages. The task of this resource is to provide the readers with truthful and objective information about Islam in Ukraine. This site represents a call to religious dialogue between Christians and Muslims, informationally-analytical ground for the discussion of actual issues. It introduces Islamic culture and religion, informs about Muslim’s position in Ukraine and in the whole world. The site contains Ukrainian and international news, media reviews (for instance, Al-Jazeera TV-channel), analytic and scholarly papers. The menu of the site is decorated by the real art product – arabesque, which means “Islam in Ukraine”. The site presupposes possibility of usage of different functions: receiving of information from other sources with the help of RSS-channels, search in the articles, built-in forum, discussion of news and articles, etc.

Since 2000 “Assalamu aleikum!” (“Peace be upon you!”) radio-programm is broadcasted, too. Guests of this programm are popular religious, state and civil agents, orientalists, scholars of religious and Islamic studies, and not just Ukrainian. The programm was broadcasted on different radio channels. Since June 2007 it is broadcasted every Sunday at 9 PM on radio “Meydan” (102,7 FM) in Crimea, or on the web-page of this sadio-station (http://www.meidan.com/), or on the page of the programm(http://www.radio.arraid.in.ua/).

Get Aquainted with Culture and Traditions

In many regions of
Ukraine local organizations are offering effective Sunday schools for the Arabic language. It is one of the most ancient languages in the world, the language of the Holy Quran, being spoken today by more than 350 million people. Besides the lessons of Arabic, the introduction to the oriental culture and the basics of Muslim faith are also involved. In Sunday schools work highly qualified teachers, native speakers of the Arabic language, that is why the students have the opportunity to communicate with the native speakers. The teachers apply the program they have designed themselves, as well as modern methods for teaching that include various didactic material such as demonstration tables, audio-recordings, video, role plays, etc. In addition, there are lessons on culture, history, arts, geography of Islamic East. Special courses are arranged for the intensive studying of Arabic during summer camps.

Anyone who is interested may be admitted to the school and become a student, irrespective of his/her religion, confession, race, nation, age, social status, etc. In fact, most of the students are non-Muslims.

Aquaintance with Islamic culture and traditions is not limited just by Sunday schools. In 2006 the “Alraid” Association started the project “Get Acquainted with Islam: without Extremes and Stereotypes”. This is the whole series of lectures on different topics, such as, “Woman in Islam”, “Personality of the Prophet”, “Military-Political System of Islam”, “Bases of Islamic Creed”, etc. The lectures are accompanied by slide-show, they are counted on students and scholars, journalists and civil servants, who because of their work need knowledge about Islam from primary sources.

The main aim of this project, which is, by the way, was successfully approved in several universities of
Eastern Ukraine, is to provide Ukrainian society with truthful information about Islam and Muslims, to debunk existing myths and to achieve peace and agreement among different cultures.

Charitable Projects

It’s not a secret that Muslims of Crimea are in the most dire need of help and support – especially representatives of the Crimean-Tatars. Due to financial support of “Arraid” in the places of solid residence of Cimean-Tatars in Autonomous Republic of Crimea were drilled and equipped tens of artesian wells and reservoirs for drinking water. This project is especially actual, since more than 40% of repatriates are not provided with drinking water. The project “A cow for every needy family” also functions successfully, for owing to it more than 450 families got a cow and promised to give its first posterity to other people in need. The first-aid station in Bakhchisaray intended for 500 persons is also opened and functions. Continuous help is given to Crimean schools in buying necessary medicines for their first-aid stations.

Recently “Arraid” started new action on building greenhouses in
Crimea. At the present day it was build already 12 greenhouses and needy families got a chance to start their own business and to strengthen their material status.

Under the guardianship of the Association are more than 600 orphan-children who get material and moral support. Dialogue of Religions and Cultures

“Alraid” always stood for an extensive dialogue between representatives of various cultures and religions. This is one of dimensions of Muslim piety. This dialogue has been led with due consideration for not only positive traditions of Islamic East, but also for experiences of co-existence and interactions of Muslim communities and organizations in the NIS countries, the EU and the USA with their non-Muslim fellow citizens.

Representatives of the “Arraid” Association several times took part in different meanings, conferences and seminars on the topics of inter-faith dialogue. Moreover, the Association has become a venue of repeated visits by leaders and representatives of many Christian confessions and Jewish communities.

Versatile and close cooperation of adherents of Islam, Christianity and Judaism, e.g. the related monotheistic religions, represents one of the most important areas of the Association’s activities, including contributions into finding solutions for global problems of humanity.

Civil Activity

With the same aim, as well as for the development of modern Ukrainian Islamic studies, at the beginning of 2004 the Association organized All-Ukrainian competition of Islamic studies for young researchers on behalf of the A. Krimsky University in Kiev, in which participate competitors from the whole
Ukraine. In 2007, anniversary year for “Arraid” was announced the third contest of A. Krimsky on the topic “Islam in the World of Globalization”.

“Arraid” collaborates with different social and religious organizations, such as “All-Ukrainian Center of Islamic Studies”, Youth Association of Religious Studies, with the SAM of Crimea, different religious associations, etc. Together with other organizations the Association carries out scientific and public forums: conferences, seminars, meetings, press-conferences, festivals and concerts. Here are just a few events which took place in the course of 10 years of “Arraid’s” functioning: 1998 – international seminar “Muslim Minority: between Theory and Practice”; 2000 – international conference “Woman in the Modern World”; 2002 – seminar “World after Tragic Events of 11th September 2001” with participation of famous agents of Ukraine and the NIS; 2003 – peaceful action “Women for Peace and Goodness”, supported by various female organizations from Ukraine.; 2006 – international scientifically-practical conference “Muslims in Modern Ukrainian Society”, in Crimea, conference seminar “Muslims for Peace and Agreement”, “Ukraine and Muslim World”; 2007 – female conference “Cherche
la Femme“, etc.

The Association strives to use only authentic data in its work, supporting different scholarly researches. For instance, the Association organized social surveys of Muslims of Ukraine in 1997 and 2003-2004. Also, in 2006 together with young researches of religious studies was held a questioning of
Kiev students concerning the issue of national and religious tolerance.

“Alraid” continuously propagates healthy life-style: organizes thematical lectures and discussions, publishes informational lists and brochures on the topic of precautions and fighting drug addiction, alcoholism, prostitution and AIDS.

The Association takes an active part in actions conducted for strengthening of peace and accord in
Ukraine and in the world. These are different seminars and conferences, held by the Council for
Europe, the Forum of European Muslim Youth and Students Organizations (FEMYSO) and other organizations.

Today it may well be affirmed that these actions entail a strong positive resonance both in
Ukraine and in Islamic states.

Spiritually-Educational Activity

In Islamic Cultural Centers of the “Alraid” Association meet, communicate and grow spiritually many Muslims of Ukraine. For them are regularly held lectures on different aspects of Islam, seminars, lessons. To stimulate Muslims to raise their spiritual perfection, in “Alraid” are held annual contests of reading of the Holy Quran by heart. As a rule they are organized at the days of the Holy month of Ramadan and encompass different age groups and levels of knowledge of verses from the Quran. During the years of its work the Association assisted to Muslims of Ukraine in building and rennovation of mosques in Crimea and other regions of
Ukraine. After a long time of raging of Soviet atheism a lot of Muslims – mostly Crimean and Volga Tatars, and emigrants from the countries of Islamic East – enjoyed the possibility of performing collective prayers in the mosques, which they were deprived before. Moreover, the mosque is not just a place for prayer, but the place for communication and learning as well, where Muslims can learn more about their religion, teach their chldren. This is also the place where burial prayers and marriage ceremonies according to Muslim laws are held.

The Association also sponspours iftars (dinners) in mosques after the finishing of daily fasts during the Holy Month of Ramadan. During Muslim holidays of Id-al-Fitr (Ramazan Bayram) and Id-al-Adha (Kurban Bayram) the needy Muslims get help from the Association, namely, clothes and food-stuffs.

The Association promotes among the believers all-round development of personality and healthy life-style, that is why its Culture Centers arrange seminars for parents, in which participate different specialists (teachers, psychologits, doctors), family meetings and joyful contests, children festivals and concerts, chess, tennis and football tournaments. In the summer traditional are family picnics, excursions, daytime camps for children with lots of interesting occupations. In many centers function or are planned different courses for women (for example, cutting and sewing, hairdressing), function gyms or training halls and sports grounds, internet-clubs.
